Icona Pop's "First Time" - Single Review

You know Icona Pop. They are the Swedish dance duo responsible for the infectious "I Love It" featuring Charli XCX back in 2012. While the talented girls have not left the music scene since the release of their biggest hit to date, they have faced some difficulty trying to match the success with decent but not as catchy follow up tracks such as "Girlfriend" and "All Night".

On the heels of their previous single, the jazz-inspired, club-ready, Erik Hassle-assisted "Emergency", Icona Pop have moved on to another sparkling number from their upcoming extended play. The new "First Time" isn't really that new at all. The carefree party starter was apparently the very first song the duo wrote together, dusting the cobwebs off in hopes of reclaiming their pop dominance on the charts.

The track does bare some similarities to the aforementioned "I Love It", specifically the loud vocal delivery and anthem-like structure. On the three-minute banger, the artists' reminisce about that something special about a former lover. "The first time we got high, the first time we got drunk, the first time we fell in love, this will never be the same, and that's okay," they sing with a more confident, stronger swing in their step.

While "First Time" can be easily interpreted as a fierce kiss-off at the end of a crumbling relationship, Icona Pop says the new/old track holds a more layered meaning today. The girls are able to look back at their career journey with the new single, from the humble beginnings to chart-topping success. Listeners can resonate with the message of love or success and turn the sing-along worthy effort into a deserved number one hit.

It's a real shame that "Emergency" has been overlooked, however, if the ladies of Icona Pop have any chance at reaching the top regions of the Billboard Hot 100 again, then "First Time" is their best bet. With easy to digest songwriting, a fun overall premise and a pulsating chorus that stays lodged in the mind long after it comes to an end, the single is a well-crafted dance/pop release.
