Gwen Stefani's "Spark The Fire" - Single Review

The wait for Gwen Stefani's full, sure-to-be epic return is almost over!

Readying her first solo album since The Sweet Escape in 2006, the "Hollaback Girl" singer is moving on from the upcoming album's lead single, the insanely catchy reggae-inspired "Baby Don't Lie", for a more infectious, Pharrell Williams-produced track in the form of "Spark The Fire". Though Stefani delivers a fast-paced, rap-like performance on the verses, the finished product is the weird, crazy, amazing mix we expect from the artist.

"Spark The Fire" faced some low quality snippet leaks, a live debut from Williams himself and usage in a random car commercial before its premiere, but the official debut of Stefani's new single this morning remains fresh and entertaining, cementing the fact the artist never disappoints when offering a unique artistic direction. While it may not be immediately captivating as some of her past releases, the new single definitely picks up some steam with a couple more plays.

Along with the intriguing delivery, the production for the new single will surely grab the listener's attention... for better or for worse. "Who got the lighter?, let's spark the fire," the artist chants on the inescapable chorus as Stefani proclaims her anticipated return. The singer claims to stay above the crowd, or face the downhill fall of their career, advice every artist needs to take to heart. Stefani has always taken unusual chances with her solo music, and they tend to pay off. The new, hard-hitting and sass-filled single is another hit.

With Pharrell behind the production reigns, and Stefani giving her trademark, unapologetic performance, the new "Spark The Fire" has a shot at radio domination in the coming weeks. That's if the label actually announces it as the upcoming, yet to be titled, album's second official single. "Baby Don't Lie" is great, still on repeat, but it sounds as if the best is still to come. The new track serves as a throwback listen of nostalgia, while still providing something fun and different.
