Great Singles That Never Were...Nelly Furtado's "Loose"

Canadian pop/folk artist Nelly Furtado had a huge hit with “I’m Like A Bird”, reinvented her sound and image with the release of Loose, and is now readying a brand new album, The Spirit Indestructible, out on Sept. 18. Before we enjoy another amazing era from the fabulous singer, let’s look back at her multi-platinum Loose, which saw the release of eight singles, and see if any others on the track list could have been hits as well. After the chart-topping success of “Promiscuous” and “Say It Right”, I feel there were two more great songs that could have done the same.

Following “In God’s Hands”, the sad and somber final single, I feel that Nelly and her record label could have serviced the up-tempo yet retrospective and lovely “Wait For You” as the album’s next offering. The song shows more of an urban/RnB side to the artist, her performance is something different and spot-on, but the power lies in its moving chorus which really embodies what Furtado is trying to say. Ever since I bought the album, I was hoping the song would receive the official single treatment, but for some reason that unfortunately never happened.
“Wait For You” had everything that 2007 was all about. The song is still pop, not like the pop music on today’s radio, but it was still uptempo enough to get listener’s singing and moving along. Instead of discussing sex or partying, Furtado’s music has always had a deep, uplifting or important message, this track is no different. The Middle Eastern-sounding instrumentals give the song something extra. Not your ordinary generic creation. When did we ever expect Nelly to be boring? Even today, when I pop the masterpiece of an album in, “Wait For You” is one of my faves. Agree?

If “Wait For You” was not going to work, the album still had one more final option. I’m telling you this record seems to be the first one where every track could have made for a successful single. “Afraid” is the opening track and it kicks things off in the right direction. Nelly shows an interesting and intriguing range on the song and then takes it up a notch once the addictive chorus comes around for the first time. Just like her most recent single, the song certainly carries an empowering message of strength and encouragement. Coming out while I was in high school, it was my anthem.
“Afraid” features the added verse from Attitude. Although I am usually skeptical of guest rap features, Attitude’s offering is short, simple and pretty damn good. As with “Wait For You”, I feel the song could have crossed over to many genres and been a big hit. It went with the direction music was at five years ago, but still showed uniqueness and immense talent. Nelly’s voice is simply beautiful, I could listen to it for hours, and I have probably played this gorgeous track a couple of hundred times since its release. It is a real shame when perfect gems never get their true moment to shine.

Of the 12 track album, eight singles saw official releases in some form or another. If “Wait For You” and “Afraid” were ever released, I think that would have been the end of the album. The final two tracks, “Glow” and “Showtime”, are my least favorite inclusions. Plus, could you imagine ten singles from one record? Unheard of!
