If there's any brush line that is raved about by everyone, it's Real Techniques. Real Techniques uses purely synthetic hair to craft dense and soft brushes. I picked my starter kits up for face and eyes back when drugstore.com was having a really good deal on the brushes (they were half off or something like that). I was pretty excited to get them and see if they lived up to the hype.
I was unfortunately pretty disappointed. I think half of the brushes in each of the kits are pretty good, however, between these two kits I'm left with a handful of brushes that are absolutely useless.
I do like the buffing brush and the contour brush in the face set. I just don't use them for what they're made. The buffing brush I found left my foundation looking fairly streaky, and it's useless for powder (it doesn't pick up powder very well, and it's too small). I do like it for contouring though. It's the perfect size. The contour brush actually doesn't really serve me for contouring purposes as I find it's quite a bit too small. It's fine for blush though. The pointed foundation brush probably wins the prize for the most worthless brush ever. I seriously cannot find a way to use this. It's too small for foundation, too big and flat for concealer. The concealer brush could be okay, but you're better off using your fingers.
The eye starter kit would be even more disappointing than the face starter kit if it weren't for the all-over lid brush. Let's start with the horrible brushes in this though. The liner brush is way too huge to do any lining with, and I don't need a whole separate brush to just pop a bit of eyeshadow in the inner corner of the eye, which is the only other thing I could see it being used for. The brow brush isn't stiff enough to work a powder through the brows and get a natural look, and it's too big for doing any lining. It's seriously so useless it makes me sad. There's a small smudge brush in the set, but I really prefer natural over synthetic brushes to smudge in powder shadow. The domed crease brush is also not really worth the hype it gets. I found it didn't blend or pick up my cream concealers at all, and it's way too big for the crease. When used on the eye, the look I'm doing just gets sloppy. The only brush that made me not return this kit is the lid brush. I use it to blend out any harsh edges after I've applied color to the crease. I use this brush everyday and love it.
Overall, I regret buying these brushes. The only one I actually use is that fluffy one in the eye kit, and I use the little case the brushes come in, but the way I see it, I could've saved the 20 bucks I spent on these two kits and bought a Trish McEvoy 30 Blending (aka best brush ever to blend out the eye).
To RT's credit, the brushes don't shed. That's pretty nice.
I think it would be awesome if the brushes were only sold separately for really cheap. I don't know why Real Techniques even continues to make some of the brushes in these kits.
